Description

The first fire did not end the seeker. It named the sweetness that kept the heart waiting and brought into view the small throne inside the chest. Now the ground begins to fall away, and the book is plain that descent is not failure.

Deep Calling unto Deep Remembrance, the second volume of the Mirror Earth Birth cycle in its Muslim Edition, follows the heart down, into a country where the questions turn personal and lose their manners. Allah has said He is nearer to the human being than the jugular vein, and nearness of that order does not only comfort; it reveals. In the deep, the names a person has carried for years — successful, wounded, strong, overlooked, righteous, misunderstood — lose their hold, and the question "Who am I?" gives way to "Whose am I?"

Six chapters and forty-eight short sections follow the descent. Deliver Your Soul, Beloved finds the poor servant, the mercy of being seen, and the tears of tawbah that soften the heart. Renewal or Rival? asks what happens when the renewal once prayed for actually arrives, and walks with the heart through its night of struggle with the nafs. Give It to Allah This Very Day answers the nafs and its endless "soon" with a single word: now. Do Not Rely on What Has Passed warns that yesterday's return cannot become today's obedience. The Greater Surrender reaches the room the heart is still defending, and the poverty before Allah that opens its door.

Beneath every name the self has collected lies the one Allah knows: servant, bearer of amānah, a soul invited home. And because nothing in this world remains by itself, the heart must remember again. Dhikr, the book says, is not an ornament around a religious life but the life of the inward world. Remembrance is daily bread for the heart, and it cannot be stored.

Qur'anic passages appear in the author's own English paraphrase, offered for reflection, and a glossary of Arabic terms is included. The book closes at a threshold with the hands open, preparing the heart for the third volume, Veil of Desolation ReBirth, which turns outward to a wounded world.
